Swedish defence minister Karin Enstrom speaking to EUobserver at the Globsec conference in Bratislava on 20 April 2013 said that Sweden was not in Nato partly because the EU treaty contained its own security guarantee. Sweden, Austria, Cyprus, Finland, Ireland and Malta were the only EU states which were not also Nato members. Historically, Sweden had stayed out of Nato in solidarity with its neighbour Finland, which had stayed out in order not to antagonise Russia. Sweden also had a tradition of neutrality going back to World War II. |
