Sweden's Foreign Affairs Ministry announced on 3 August 2015 it had expelled a Russian diplomat for actions 'not in line with the Vienna Convention.' In a tit-for-tat move, Russia retaliated by expelling a Swedish diplomat.

Tension between the two countries have been increasingly higher, following the alledged incursion of Russian submarines into Swedish waters. Sweden, albeit not a NATO member, has increasingly cooperated with its allies to control and restrict Russia's activity in the region.
