The sovereign debt crisis has shattered citizens' faith in the European Union and increased distrust between core nations, according to a study 'The New Sick Man of Europe: the European Union' released on the 13 May 2013 by the Pew Research Centre, one year ahead of the European Parliament elections in May 2014.

France has seen the steepest confidence drop in the EU and in national politicians alike, with the same sour mood in Italy, Spain and Greece.
