Remarks by the President of the European Council Donald Tusk after his meeting with Prime Minister of Turkey Ahmet Davutoğlu on 10 September 2015, in Ankara. Disturbed by recent violence in Turkey that included an escalation in clashes between security forces and the terrorist Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), the president of the European Council called on Ankara to put the peace process back on track. As Mr Tusk visited Turkey, HDP leader Selahattin Demirtaş warned the country was being dragged into a 'civil war' ahead of November 2015 parliamentary elections, following a wave of attacks on its offices by nationalists. Turkey's interior ministry said on the 10 September 2015 that at least 30 people had died in clashes in the Turkish city of Cizre since a military operation began there the previous week. Also on the 10 September 2015 Turkish officials stopped a group of pro-Kurdish members of parliament from entering Cizre. Lawmakers claimed some 21 civilians have been killed in a government military operation there. |
