European Commissioner Malmstrom announced on 31 October 2014 that the Triton operation requested by Italy would start on 1 November 2014 as scheduled. Frontex had received sufficient offer of both equipment and border guards from the vast majority of Member States. The Agency was therefore ready to launch this tailored made operation that matched all the requests made by the Italian authorities. The mission would focus on border control, only carrying out search-and-rescue operations if necessary. Initially employing five aircraft and seven vessels, it was to patrol a zone stretching just 30 nautical miles off Europe's coast at an estimated cost of €2.9m a month. |
