A package of further restrictive measures against Russia was adopted by the European Council on the 8 September 2014, deepening the targeted measures of 31 July 2014. The sanctions aimed at promoting a change of course in Russia's actions destabilising eastern Ukraine and come in the wake of the European Council of 30 August 2014, which condemned the increasing inflows of fighters and weapons from the territory of the Russian Federation into Eastern Ukraine and the aggression by Russian armed forces on Ukrainian soil. It was also stated that the sanctions would enter into force within the following days, thus leaving time for an assessment of the implementation of the cease-fire agreement and the peace plan and enabling the EU to review the agreed sanctions if needed. On the 11 September 2014 it was announced that the sanctions against Russia would enter force the following day, 12 September 2014. Meanwhile countries such as Poland and Slovakia and a German gas operator began reporting on the 11 September 2014 a reduction in gas supplies from Russian supplier Gazprom, possibly as a warning [please check the related background information]. |
