Reports of the commemorations on International Holocaust Remembrance Day on the 27 January 2015. Federica Mogherini, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission made a statement on the day about the crime in which six million Jews as well as millions of other innocent victims, Roma, political prisoners, prisoners of war, disabled people, homosexuals, were murdered in Nazi death camps. Auschwitz survivors urged the world not to allow a repeat of the crimes of the Holocaust as they marked 70 years since the camp's liberation. Some 300 Auschwitz survivors returned for the ceremony on the 27 January 2015. Ronald S Lauder, president of the World Jewish Congress, told the commemoration: 'Jews are targeted in Europe once again because they are Jews...'. Speaking in Prague, European Parliament's president Martin Schulz said: 'Too many allowed hatred to grow, too many turned a blind eye, too many stood silent. We must never allow this to happen again'. Meanwhile in Brussels MEPs and members of the Belgian Jewish community gathered to observe a minute's silence in memory of the millions of victims of the Holocaust. |
