On the 26 October 2016, several areas in Italy were struck by earthquakes, including towns that had suffered a deadly earthquake in August 2016, when over 300 people had died. The European Union stated that it stood in solidarity with the Italian people and authorities at this time. Following a request by the Italian authorities, the EU's Copernicus Emergency Management Services was activated to provide damage assessment satellite maps for the affected areas. It was reported on the 30 October 2016 that a further powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.6 had struck central Italy. The quake - which could be felt from Rome to Venice - struck 3.5 miles north of the town of Norcia. |
