SPD leaders urge Sarrazin to quit party

Leaders of Germany’s opposition Social Democrats appealed on the 10 September 2010to Thilo Sarrazin, the rebel board member of the German Bundesbank under fire for his criticism of Muslim immigrants, to quit the party before he is formally expelled.

However, although he has been widely condemned on all sides of the political spectrum, and in most parts of the German media, for anti-Muslim prejudice, opinion polls suggest that his views are popular.
