About 2,000 demonstrators berated politicians and blocked their way to the Catalan parliament on the 15 June 2011 delaying a budget debate, in the latest eruption of public protest in Spain. They were protesting against regional budget cuts. Until the unrest, it appeared that the so-called May 15 movement had faded since the May 2011 regional elections. Nevertheless, after announcing that its public employees would be expected to work more hours, or take fewer vacation days, in return for no additional pay and in all likelihood less, the Catalan regional government on the 15 July 2011 said it would be pursuing a labour-force reduction plan (ERE) to dispense with the services of 1,475 of its 16,000 workers. |
