Spain’s acting foreign minister José Manuel García-Margallo told Spanish radio on the 4 March 2016 that if the United Kingdom left the European Union he would 'raise the question of Gibraltar' the very next day. Gibraltar’s Chief Minister Fabien Picardo has said in the context of the BREXIT Remain or Leave referendum in June 2016 that Britain should remain in the EU and that access to the single market and freedom of movement were vital for Gibraltar. In March 2016 the Government of Gibraltar made a submission to the Foreign Affairs Committee of the UK House of Commons on the consequences for Gibraltar of the Referendum to determine whether the United Kingdom should remain in the European Union or should leave. Spain proposed on the 24 June 2016 sharing sovereignty over Gibraltar after the voters in the United Kingdom in the referendum to leave the European Union, saying it would allow the overseas territory to maintain access to the EU's single market. |
