Article reports that less than four days after launching them, Spain backed away on the 11 January 2010 from its proposals for rigorously enforced joint economic policies in the European Union.

The hurried climbdown, announced by Miguel Angel Moratinos, Spanish foreign minister, followed criticism from Rainer Brüderle, the German economy minister, and a comment from Herman Van Rompuy, the EU’s new permanent president, that the proposals were 'very ambitious'.
