The German foreign intelligence service knew more about the activities of the US National Security Agency (NSA) in Germany than previously known, US whistleblower Edward Snowden claimed in an interview in Der Spiegel, July 2013.

Meanwhile, a German government spokesman said on the 8 July 2013 that the the German intelligence service (BND) has been co-operating 'for decades' with the US, but only within legal boundaries.
