EurActiv reported in September 2015 on how Serbia is handling the refugee crisis, as thousands of people try to cross the country to reach the European Union through the so-called 'Western Balkan Route'.

The European Union praised Serbia for coping with the large stream of people crossing its territory. Amid speculation that the country was set to host large refugee camps, the latest reports pointed to temporary shelters to be built urgently, as Winter approached. EU funding was planned to help creating conditions for thousands of migrants.

Hungary, for its side, criticised its neighbour for letting migrants freely come to their shared border. There were also allegations that Serbia was promoting the movement of refugees through Hungary.
