Ratko Mladic, the former Bosnian Serb general who was Europe’s most wanted war crimes fugitive, was arrested in Serbia, the country’s president Boris Tadic said on the 27 May 2011.

The arrest would provide a significant boost for Serbia’s hopes of joining the European Union, which have long been held back as many EU states accused the former Yugoslav republic of not doing enough to bring the longtime fugitive to justice.
