Scottish nationalists raise prospect of another independence vote after 2016

Following the vote against independence for Scotland from the United Kingdom in the referendum of September 2014, the issue of a possible further referendum on the issue in the future was raised on a number of occasions in the 2015 UK General Election campaign.

The leader of the SNP said on the 8 April 2015 that her party would only press for another independence referendum if something 'material changed', such as the UK voting to leave the EU.

Following the good result achieved by the SNP in the general election on 7 May 2015, Nicola Sturgeon was seen in a strong position to further negotiate more autonomy for Scotland.
