NATO member Turkey called for an emergency meeting of NATO ambassadors for later on the 24 November 2015. After the meeting NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said 'I have previously expressed my concerns about the implications of the military actions of the Russian Federation close to NATO’s borders'... I look forward to further contacts between Ankara and Moscow and I call for calm and de-escalation. Diplomacy and de-escalation are important to resolve this situation'. Commentators discussed the wider and serious implications of the incident.
