Thousands of Russians marched in protest against the armed conflict in Ukraine on the 21 September 2014, in the first major anti-war rally since the start of the standoff between Kyiv and pro-Russian rebels. Ukraine's military said on the 22 September that it was pulling back artillery and heavy armour from the front line with separatists, backing President Petro Poroshenko's peace plan for a conflict that has cost more than 3,000 lives. In the meantime, rebel leaders in eastern Ukraine scheduled to hold elections on 2 November, in an apparent show of defiance towards the government in Kiev. Nato stated it had observed a "significant" withdrawal of Russian troops from eastern Ukraine, but added that some forces still remained there. Russia called yesterday on 28 September for a "reset 2.0" in relations with the United States, saying the situation in Ukraine that had led to Western sanctions against Russia was improving thanks to Kremlin peace initiatives. |
