The Russian embassy in London held talks talks with the United Kingdom Foreign Office on the 22 May 2014 over alleged comments by Prince Charles in Canada alleging comparison of Vladimir Putin to Adolf Hitler. While on an official visit to Canada in May 2014, Charles was reported to made remarks concerning Russia's annexation of Crimea during a private conversation with a Jewish survivor of the second world war. 'Now Putin is doing just about the same as Hitler,' Charles told Marianne Ferguson, a volunteer at the Canadian Museum of Immigration in Halifax. Meanwhile in Ukraine, BBC News reported on the 22 May 2014 that Ukraine's government had confirmed a deadly attack on troops in the eastern region of Donetsk, with reports saying at least 10 soldiers died. Tensions were rising in the country in advance of the Presidential election due to go ahead on the 25 May 2014, with self-proclaimed leaders in parts of eastern Ukraine saying they would discourage people from voting and did not recognise the legitimacy of the election. Ukraine’s foreign ministry strongly protested against attempts to cross the country’s border by armed insurgents from Russia, in what was seen as attempts to disrupt the election. |
