Euro|Topics and other sources reported on the 28 July 2014 that Russia must pay former shareholders of oil giant Yukos $50bn in damages as a result of a ruling from the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague. Russia said it would appeal the decision. The ruling had, commentators wrote, taken on particular significance in the midst of the Ukraine crisis, stressing that Russian taxpayers would have to foot the bill. In a separate case the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg ruled on the 31 July 2014 that Russia must pay about €2.5bn to former shareholders in Yukos. Russia's Justice Ministry said the ruling was 'unfair' and 'not impartial'. |
