Russian energy minister Alexander Novak warned that EU states which re-exported gas to Ukraine would face cut-offs, with Hungary already stopping its reverse flow. Mr Novak's statements were made ahead of talks in Berlin between the European Commission and Russian and Ukrainian energy officials, on 26 September 2014. Ukraine's Prime Minister Arseny Yatseniuk had accused Russia on the day before that it was attempting to freeze his country in the coming winter by using natural gas as a weapon to subjugate the former Soviet Republic. The European Commission presented in Berlin a deal which could avoid a gas conflict during the Winter and which it was keen for Ukraine to sign it. However, the country was wary of the terms and of broader EU-Russia energy ties. EUObserver reported on 2 October 2014 that Russia had cut gas deliveries to Slovakia by half, in what it considered to be a bad sign for EU efforts to broker a deal on Ukraine. Prime minister Robert Fico stated after a cabinet meeting in Bratislava that the drop had come without any warning. Ahead of an ASEM meeting in October 2014, Russian President Vladimir Putin cautioned that gas supplies to European countries could be compromised unless the Ukraine resolves a gas dispute with Moscow. Mr Putin was scheduled to meet with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko on the sidelines of the meeting. |
