Following a statement from the European Commission and several EU energy ministers [which can be found here] asking Russia to clarify its intentions concerning the South Stream project, Russian gas monopoly Gazprom confirmed on 9 December 2014 that the decision to abandon the project was final.

On a visit to Turkey on 1 December 2014 , Russian president Vladimir Putin said the project was over and that the 63 billion cubic metres per year (bcm/y) of gas would be shipped to Turkey instead of Bulgaria, which according to the Russian leader, had obstructed the project.
