Russia bans European vegetable imports

Russia announced a ban on imports of European vegetables on 2 June 2011, particularly from Germany, amid a scare over a particularly virulent strain of E. coli that has confounded health experts on the continent.

Despite EU protests, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said Russia would not lift an embargo on European vegetables until the European Union explained the cause of the E. coli outbreak.
