Report of the meeting of the NATO Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Brussels, 2 December 2014. NATO Foreign Ministers announced that an interim Spearhead Force would be operational early in 2015 to improve the Alliance’s readiness, and agreed to maintain a continuous NATO presence in the eastern part of the Alliance through 2015. 'We are going to implement the Readiness Action Plan on time and in full', said NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg. He expressed his concern about Russia's 'aggressive' behaviour and said the 'spearhead' unit was to counter any possible threat and to reassure the member states in Eastern Europe. Russia had accused NATO on 1 December 2014 of destabilising northern Europe and the Baltics by carrying out drills in the region, while announcing new military exercises of its own. The increasing tension between the two sides was to be seen within the context of the conflict in Ukraine, but also the wider security ramifications involving other countries bordering Russia in Eastern Europe. The NATO Foreign Ministers also decided to launch mission Resolute Support as of 1 January 2015 opening a new chapter of cooperation between the Alliance and Afghanistan. The new NATO-led mission to train, advise and assist the Afghan National Security Forces would 'ensure that we continue to build on the gains we have made in Afghanistan', NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said. |
