On the 21 April 2014, the Russian foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, accused Ukraine of violating an accord reached in Geneva the previous week aimed at averting a wider conflict. Oleksandr Turchynov, Ukraine's acting president, called for government forces to relaunch an offensive against pro-Russian rebels, after a local politician from his own party was found dead, displaying signs of torture. The US announced on the 22 April 2014 it was sending hundreds of troops for military exercises to four countries in Eastern Europe to assure them of its commitment to the region's defence amid ongoing tension in Ukraine. US vice-president Joe Biden met Mr. Turchynov on the following day, while saying that onus was on Russia to reduce tension. Russia issued a blunt warning on the 23 April 2014 that it would respond if its interests were attacked in Ukraine. On the 24 April 2014, commandos moved on the separatist stronghold of Sloviansk in eastern Ukraine days after the new 'anti-terrorist' operation was announced. The situation continued to deteriorate on the ground in Ukraine and with blunt comments from US Secretary of State John Kerry who according to EurActiv 'accused Russia of using propaganda to hide what it was actually trying to do in eastern Ukraine - destabilize the region and undermine next month's planned Ukrainian presidential elections'. |
