EUObserver reported that the European Commission warned on the 11 July 2012 that Romania's constitutional turmoil might ultimately result in its longed-for entry into the EU's passport-free zone being delayed still further. Romania’s prime minister was expected to sign up to a series of constitutional reforms on the 16 July 2012 that European leaders hoped would reaffirm democracy in one of the EU’s newest member states. In the name of serving the greater good of the EU, the European Commission claimed it was forced to strong-arm its members. Examples from Romania, Hungary and Italy, however, revealed something quite different: civil society and local cultures are sometimes being sacrificed, said an article in Die Welt. |
