Romania's Prime Minister Victor Ponta resigned on the 4 November 2015 in the light of rising civil unrest and protests in Bucharest and other cities following a major nightclub fire tragedy the previous weekend. The mayor of the district of Bucharest where the nightclub fire occurred, and the country's Interior Minister, Gabriel Oprea, also resigned. Romania's president Klaus Iohannis appointed Education Minister Sorin Cimpeanu as interim prime minister on the 5 November 2015, but said he would consult with civil society groups and political leaders before making a final decision. EurActiv suggested that a former European Commissioner Dacian Ciolos was being considered a possibility to become the new Prime Minister until the next scheduled parliamentary elections in December 2016. This was confirmed by Romanian President Klaus Iohannis on the 10 November 2015, who said that Dacian Cioloş would become a caretaker PM leading a broad-based technocratic government. Dacian Ciolos's government won a confidence vote in the Romanian parliament with backing from the biggest political groupings on the 17 November 2015. |
