Article reports that the German-led efforts to rescue Greece, on the eve of informal European Council summit in Brussels on the 11 February 2010, are the most dramatic of several recent signs that the 27-nation bloc may be on the threshold of a new surge towards closer economic integration, politicians and economic analysts said on the 10 February 2010.

Other signs include a willingness to use new instruments set up under the EU’s Lisbon treaty to pursue more synchronised economic policies, and the imminent publication of a report by Mario Monti, the former EU commissioner, on how to energise the bloc’s single market.
