The President of the European Council President Donald Tusk met the United Kingdom Prime Minister Theresa May on 8 September 2016 in London, as part of his preparations for the Informal meeting of the 27 heads of state or government, Bratislava, 16 September 2016, when plans for the EU after the departure of the UK were due to be discussed. Mr Tusk called for the talks for the United Kingdom to negotiate to leave the EU and establish a new relationship with the EU to start as soon as possible, following Britain’s vote in a referendum on the 23 June 2016 to leave the European Union. The two leaders also discussed items on the agenda of the European Council to be held in October 2016. |
