Relations between the European Union and Costa Rica

Political relations between Costa Rica and the European Union have historically been very strong. Both regions initiated a very fruitful and mutually beneficial dialogue: the San José dialogue of 1984.
Over the years the dialogue has been expanded, adapting to the new reality in the Central American region. Costa Rica is a member of the Association Agreement between the EU and Central America.

In Economics Matters, The European Union is a major trading partner for Costa Rica; according to the Statistical Office of the European Union. Costa Rica trades also with the European Union, it is member of the Generalised Scheme of Preferences.

The European Union intervened in Costa Rica to prevent Natural Disaster
Costa Rica also actively participates in regional programmes for Latin America such as the Seventh Framework Programme on Science and Technology.
