Recession could force Italy to seek EU aid

Article reported that Italy’s worsening economic crisis and high debt costs had led senior officials in Rome to warn in September 2012 that the country might be forced by the end of 2012 to apply for an EU bond-buying programme in exchange for implementing further tough economic reforms.

The situation was complicated by the forthcoming general election in 2014.
