Russian President Vladimir Putin took part in a meeting in Minsk on the 26 August 2014 of the Heads of State of the Customs Union ('Eurasian trio' - Belarus, Kazakhstan and Russia), with President Poroshenko of Ukraine and representatives of the European Union, including High Representative / Vice-President Catherine Ashton. Presidents Putin and Poroshenko held their first one-to-one face to face meeting to discuss the civil unrest in Ukraine. In addition, there were discussions in the context of the Customs Union of Belarus, Kazakhstan and Russia, with Ukraine and EU representatives. No major breakthroughs were announced, and the armed conflict between Ukraine and the pro-Russia separatists continued. Ukrainian authorities made further allegations of Russian incursions into the country's conflict-ridden east on the 27 August 2014. News reports on the 28 August 2014 reported that German Chancellor Angela Merkel had demanded an explanation from Russia's President Vladimir Putin amid the reports that Russian troops had launched an incursion into south-east Ukraine. EurActiv and other news sources reported that the US and NATO were saying that Russian incursions into Ukraine now took place in an overt and obvious form. NATO’s Allied Command Operations in Mons, Belgium released new satellite imagery on the 28 August 2014 that showed Russian combat forces engaged in military operations inside the sovereign territory of Ukraine. Ukrainian President cancelled a visit to Turkey, citing 'Russian troop deployments' in the east of the country. |
