Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko announced on the 8 September 2014 that 1,200 Ukrainian prisoners taken by pro-Russian separatists had been freed. In the meantime, the signing of new sanctions against Russia by EU governments was adopted on the 8 September 2014 but delayed [for more information, check Related URL on the subject]. Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said that Moscow for its part would react if the sanctions were actually implemented by restricting its airspace for Western airlines. Mr Poroshenko said the situation in the country's wartorn east had changed 'radically' since a truce had been signed the week before. The Ukrainian president promised to act quickly to grant more autonomy to pro-Russian regions. According to a survey carried out in June and published in September by the US-based German Marshall Fund (GMF), most Europeans considered that Ukraine should be invited to join the EU and wanted tougher sanctions on Russia. |
