A YouGov poll on behalf of The Sun and The Times published on the 1 September 2014 suggested that the No vote's lead ahead of the Scottish Referendum vote on the 1 September 2014 had narrowed to just six points. This trend continued in another YouGov poll issued in The Sunday Times on the 7 September 2014, which suggested that, of those who have made up their mind, 51% planned to back independence, while 49% intended to vote no. Also, on the 7 September 2014 UK Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne promised a timetable for further devolution if voters in Scotland rejected independence in the referendum. The plan would include 'more tax powers, more spending powers, more plans for powers over the welfare state'. Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond said such new proposals at this stage would lack credibility. On the 10 September 2014, British Prime Minister David Cameron begged Scots not to rip apart the United Kingdom's 'family of nations', flying to Scotland to man the barricades against the surge in support for independence eight days before the referendum. Other UK political party leaders also visited Scotland in the latter days of the referendum campaign to argue for the union and to propose further devolution of powers. |
