The Catalan News Agency reported on the 9 January 2016 that Cross-party list ‘Junts Pel Sí’ and radical left CUP had finally reached an agreement that day to resolve the presidency of the new Catalan government and launch the independence roadmap. The current Catalan President and ‘Junts Pel Sí’'s number four, Artur Mas had decided to step aside and president of the Association of Municipalities for Independence (AMI) and mayor of Girona city, Carles Pugidemont, had been appointed as the candidate of consensus. In exchange, some of CUP’s MPs would resign in order to guarantee the stability of the new government. The investiture debate took on the 10 January 2016. Carles Pugidemont was confirmed in office by 70 votes in favour to 63 against, and pledged to continue the campaign for Catalonia to secede from Spain within 18 months. In response, Spanish PM Mariano Rajoy pledged to fight for national unity. He said 'The government won't allow a single act that could harm the unity and sovereignty of Spain'. New Catalan President Carles Puigdemont committed himself at the first plenary meeting of the new Catalan parliament on the 20 January 2016 to putting Catalonia 'on the verge of' independence within 18 months and doing it 'with all the guarantees and without false moves'. |
