Results from the parliamentary election in Ukraine held on the 26 October 2014 indicated a majority for political parties supporting pro-European and western policies. President Poroshenko said in a statement that the results showed that voters backed his plan to end the separatist conflict in the east of Ukraine, his pro-Western policies, and democratic reforms. A coalition government was expected to be formed of pro-Western parties supporting President Poroshenko and Prime Minister Arseny Yatsenyuk (see below). Ukraine’s Central Election Commission said on the 27 October 2014 that voter turnout was 52.42%. The largest voter turnout was in the Lviv region with 70% turnout and the regions showing the lowest turnout were in the Donetsk (32.4%) and Lugansk (32.87%) regions. On the 21 November 2014 on the first anniversary of the start of the EuroMaidan revolution five political parties that had been elected on the 26 October 2014 to Ukraine’s parliament signed a coalition agreement bringing the country closer to the West and committing it to pursuing European Union integration and NATO membership. |
