The European Parliament's international trade committee approved on 18 January 2016 a set of recommendations regarding the negotiations on a Trade in Services Agreement (TiSA) with countries representing 70% of world trade in services. Members of the committee considered that these negotiations should deliver international rules and more opportunities for firms from the European Union to supply services such as transport and telecoms in third countries. However, they also highlighted that 'nothing should prevent EU, national and local authorities from maintaining, improving and applying their laws', notably on labour and data protection. In this report, MEPs set out their guidelines to the European Commission, the EU's representative on the negotiations. Once the agreement was concluded, the members of the committee would have the chance to have a final say. Negotiations for a Trade in Services Agreement have been under way since April 2013. The EP's plenary session voted on these recommendations on 3 February, setting out for the European Commission, as the EU negotiator, the Parliament's priorities for the remainder of the negotiations. |
