Talks resumed on the 14 March 2016 between representatives of the Government and those of the opposition in Syria, where the United Nations envoy overseeing the discussions said a 'fragile' cessation of hostilities had been holding for 18 days. It was also noted that March 2016 was the fifth anniversary of the outbreak of the Syrian conflict. Since March 2011, Syria has been in the throes of a conflict that has killed over 260,000 people and forced more than half of all Syrians to leave their homes. An estimated four million Syrians have sought refuge in neighbouring countries alone, including Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq and Egypt. The crisis, described as the worst humanitarian disaster of our time, had caused untold suffering for Syrian men, women and children. Russia also announced on the 14 March 2016 that Russia’s Armed Forces had fulfilled their main mission in Syria and a timetable for the withdrawal of the Aerospace Forces’ main air grouping had been agreed with the Syrian authorities. Russia would maintain an aviation support centre in Syria in order to monitor compliance with the ceasefire and its naval base. The Russian and Syrian presidents expressed the hope that the full-format talks between Syrian Government officials and opposition representatives under UN aegis in Geneva would produce concrete results. |
