The EU and others expressed rising concerns about the the Islamic State’s (IS) assaults on Iraq’s Christian and Yazidi minorities in early August 2014. On the 11 August 2014 the EU issued a statement welcoming Iraqi President Fuad Ma’soum's decision to nominate Mr. Haider Al Abadi as Prime Minister designate of Iraq, to replace the existing PM, Nouri Maliki. On the 11 August 2014 EUObserver reported that France and Italy had urged the EU foreign service (EEAS) to call an emergency meeting of foreign ministers to discuss the situation in Iraq. Euro|Topics wrote on the 12 August 2014 that the US had announced on the 11 August 2014 that it would start delivering weapons to Kurdish fighters in Iraq, who it considered allies in the fight against the terrorist militia Islamic State. Arms supplies and airstrikes were justified, commentators in various European newspapers wrote, and called on Europe to show more commitment for its own sake. |
