The European Parliament approved in plenary on 6 October 2015 a non-binding resolution regarding geographical indications (GI). Members of the parliament considered that EU-wide protection of these indications should be extended from agricultural products to include regionally and locally manufactured goods and handicraft products. According to the MEPs, this would support local economic development, boost tourism, strengthen consumer confidence and help preserve cultural heritage and traditional know-how. By the time the resolution was approved, unitary geographical indication (GI) protection was provided for agricultural products from a specific geographical origin possessing certain qualities or made according to traditional methods. However, there was no unitary GI protection for non-agricultural products at EU level. Even so, 15 EU member states had specific national legislation on GI protection for non-agricultural products resulting in different degrees of protection in the member states. |
