The European Parliament's civil liberties committee approved its support to an emergency mechanism to recolate an initial total of 40,00 asylum seekers from Italy and Greece to other member states of the European Union.

The committee stated an upcoming permanent scheme, on which the EP would decide jointly with the Council of the European Union, must be based 'on a more substantial contribution to solidarity and responsibility-sharing among member states'.

Home ministers were scheduled to discuss this topic at a meeting on 20 July 2015. Due to the temporary nature of the mechanism, the EP was consulted under Article 78(3) of the Treaty of the European Union.

The European Parliament backed in plenary on 9 September 2015 this temporary relocation mechanism.
