The European Commission on 20 February 2014 decided to refer Ireland to the Court of Justice of the EU for failing to fully transpose the EU internal energy market rules. To date, Ireland has only partially transposed the Electricity Directive (2009/72/EC) which aims to ensure that electricity is generated, transported and sold in competitive markets. The Electricity Directive should have been transposed by the Member States by 3 March 2011.
