The European Parliament asked the European Commission in a resolution approved on 10 June 2015 to assess the situation in Hungary and to establish a mechanism within the European Union to monitor democracy, the rule of law and human rights annually across the EU. The resolution followed a debate held on 19 May 2015 concerning Hungary, the possibility of reinstating the death penalty and the consultation on migration undertaken by the country's government. Reinstating the death penalty in Hungary would breach the EU Treaties and Charter of fundamental rights, according to the resolution approved. The wording of the Hungarian government’s public consultation on migration was considered to be 'highly misleading, biased and unbalanced'. Members of the EP condemned Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orbán’s repeated statements on the possibility of reinstating the death penalty in Hungary and stressed the duty of prime ministers to 'lead by example'. |
