The EU stepped up its humanitarian assistance to the Syrian crisis on the 29 January 2015. European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management Christos Stylianides, and Commissioner for European Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Johannes Hahn, went to Lebanon and Jordan on a joint visit to discuss the growing needs of Syrian refugees and the growing burden on neighbouring countries. The European Union increased its assistance to the Syria crisis by €136m in humanitarian funding, half of which would go to needs inside Syria via cross-border assistance from neighbouring countries, and the other half to Syrian refugees and host communities in neighbouring Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan and Iraq. This included €37m to Lebanon and €20. to Jordan in 2015. |
