The European Parliament held a debate on 15 December 2015 regarding the governance of the Eurozone and the completion of the Economic and Monetary Union. Eurogroup president Jeroen Dijsselbloem stated that there was 'no reason for cynicism about the euro', but also warned against too much optimism, because society's indebtedness was still holding back growth, forcing fiscal policies to be pursued. European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker reiterated that the European Parliament is the parliament of the euro. He said: 'The euro is a political project and we are a political Commission. This project requires democratic supervision and democratic accountability and Parliament should play a central role in this'. The parliament was expected to vote on a resolution on 17 December in which it states its position on Eurozone governance plans tabled by the EC on 21 October. |
