Press Release: Data protection reform: Council adopts position at first reading

On 8 April 2016, the Council of the European Union adopted its position at first reading on data protection reform, which paved the way for the final adoption of the legislative package by the European Parliament at its plenary session in April.

Data protection reform was a legislative package aimed at updating and modernising existing data protection rules. It included two legislative instruments: the general data protection regulation (intended to replace directive 95/46/EC) and the data protection directive in the area of law enforcement (intended to replace the 2008 data protection framework decision).
