The European Parliament's environment committee approved on 23 September a resolution which constitutes its mandate for the EP's delegation to the COP 21 meeting in Paris in November 2015. The committee urged its delegation to call for a 40% cut in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, a 40% energy-efficiency target and a binding 30% target for renewable energy. The Council of the European Union had already agreed on its position for the COP21 conference in Paris on 18 September. The European Parliament backed in plenary the committee's proposal on 14 October. French president Francois Hollande told the United Nations on the 28 September 2015 that the climate summit was humanity's last chance to avert the catastrophic effects of global warming. |
