The European Parliament's agriculture committee approved in second reading on 23 February 2016 the informal agreement with the Council of the European Union on measures to prevent and halt outbreaks of animal diseases such as avian flu or African swine fever.

The proposal, on diseases that are transmissible among animals and potentially to hummans too, puts more emphasis on prevention and helps keep pace with scientific progress.
