The European Commission on the 14 August 2014 held a first exchange of views with Member State experts on the potential impact of the Russian sanctions announced on imports of certain agricultural products during the previous week. This was a Horizontal Agricultural Markets Management Committee meeting where Member States sent along experts from their respective Ministry of Agriculture.

The meeting agreed that the situation is the most urgent for certain perishable vegetables hit by the ban, where the season has already begun and a key export market has suddenly disappeared with no immediate prospect of an obvious alternative. Based on the new information received from the Member States at the meeting, the Commission confirmed that it would come forward with appropriate new measures at the beginning of the following week.

EurActiv reported on the 14 August 2014 that the Slovakian prime minister, Robert Fico, criticised EU sanctions against Russia as a ‘meaningless’ gesture that would hit growth prospects.
