The European Commission unveiled on 7 June 2016 its plans for a results-oriented Partnership Framework to mobilise and focus the European Union's action and resources on managing migration in its external element. This framework aimed to be the context in which the EU seeks tailor made partnerships with key third countries of origin and transit, using for that purpose all policies and instruments at its disposal to achieve concrete results. The Commission aimed to save lives at sea, to increase returns - enabling migrants and refugees to stay closer to home - and, in the long term, to help third countries' development in order to address root causes of irregular migration. The European Parliament's plenary session debated the proposal on the same day. |
